| This article features two sets of comparisons between Mies van der Rohe’s early house projects and Renaissance garden villas——the Riehl House and Villa Medici at Fiesole; the Urbig House and the Villa Imperiale at Pesaro. In highlighting the great resemblance between their ideals and strategies in dealing the relationship between the building and the landscape, I hope to illustrate how the development of early modernist architecture was built upon a critical adaption of historic architecture. This, in turn, refutes Post-modernists’ accusation that modernism architecture broke connection with historic traditions. |
