| The formation of Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc’s rationality closely corresponded to the turbulent but liberal social atmosphere in the 19th Century France. Analyzing the Gothic spirit from Nationality and the philosophy and methodology from Natural Science, the paper follows the route of Viollet-le-Duc’s self-reconstruction during his lifetime. Moreover, it uncovers that his unique viewpoint towards history contributed to the definition of Modernity by the contemporaries, as well as the successors. |
