The aesthetic study of the Chinese garden in the 20th century has made tremendous developments and enriched its understanding since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Borrowing concepts from the Qing dynasty studies of Chinese poetry, the author categorizes these interpretations into four ideologies: the Jili School, primarily concerning design principles; the Gediao School, exploring stylistic variations; the Shenyun School, emphasizing the spatial charm (yijing) beyond material confi nement; and the Xingling School, considering the garden as a place for self-expression. He further argues that CHEN Congzhou, a distinguished 20th century scholar of the Chinese garden with interests and infl u-ences to arts and literature, made unique contributions to all four schools. The author fi rstly posits that CHEN combined the principles of poetry and painting in the interpretation of garden design; secondly, that he supplemented the garden connoisseurship with stylistic appreciation of Chinese poetry and opera; thirdly, that he was the fi rst Chinese architec-tural historian who took part in late 1970s discussion on the issue of yijing in Chinese gardens; and fourthly, that he insisted on exploring the beauty of the garden in cultivating an artistic mind and nourishing a passionate soul. CHEN’s works stands for an oriental understanding of what Martin Heidegger called “poetic dwelling.”
