| John Soane was an important British architect of the Georgian Period. He emphasized the importance of architectural character in his “Lectures on Architecture”, which provides posterity with a perspective to understand his architectures. This essay analyzes the influence of the French theory “Caractère” on Soane’s architectures, especially in ornament and in order and facade. This essay also suggests that the theory of “Caractère” can be used to explain Soane’s choice between simplicity and opulence in his architecture. |
