This essay explores the questions of “what is Japanese architecture?” and “how has it evolved in an international context over time?” Is Japanese architecture defined simply by citizenship, language and race of its architects and builders? Can it be defined by a particular sensitivity towards the regional context of Japan? In other words, is Japanese architecture defined by its designers and creators or is it defined by the land in which it is built? Is it a style, which can be transported beyond its national boundaries? Or rather, does all that is built in Japan from ancient times to the present constitute Japanese architecture? Can an expression of the architecture of Japan be implicit rather than explicit? These questions indeed defy singular answers and perhaps can be understood through a more complex constellation of expressions evolving through time. Such a constellation expresses a configuration of both physical and perceptual expressions both inside and outside of Japan. The multiple nodes articulate the multi-directional flow of inspirations, translations and transformations embodied in Japan represented at international expositions, exhibitions, publications and realized buildings. These perceptions would further evolve through the travel and exchanges among architects and sites connecting Japan with the rest of the world. These themes are discussed in this essay through “early perceptions” in international expositions, publications and exhibitions of the architecture of Japan, “constellation of influences and inspirations” among architects, notions of “architecture and utopia” between Japan, Italy and beyond, and “contemporary trajectories.”
