| Published in Ta Kung Pao of Tianjin on December 8, 1947, On New Thoughts About Architectural and
Urban Design by Liang Ssu-cheng has remained largely unknown to most researches on him today. Liang’s article was
the transcript of his first talk to the Chinese peers after his visit to the United States in 1947. As it is summarized in this
introduction, Liang shared with his audience four observations on the development of architectural and urban design in
the West. They are taking the social improvement as the goal of design,considering space as the essence of architecture,
regarding the combination of architecture with nature as the ideal environment, and following the Howardian idea of
garden city as the new model for the design of decentralized cities. This article reflects the new influence of America on
the development of Liang’s architectural thinking. |
