| This historiographical essay is a collection of reading notes that outlines the debates and developments in the study of Song dynasty state building standards in the Yingzhao Fashi. A comparative reading of scholarly works highlights four key issues: i) how the standard module (cai) prescribed in the book was applied in building
construction, ii) whether all measurements in a building’s construction were subject to cai, iii) the logic behind the division of the eight cai grades, and iv) whether the compilation of these state standards was influenced by contemporary architecture in Southern China. |
