| Cumberland New Town is the 15th new town built during the New Town Movement in U.K. after World War II, and it has its own uniqueness due to its different site selection and planning methods compared to other new towns. Its town center is a rare example of the megastructure movement in the field of architecture from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Its project proposal and scheme were formed before Ralph Wilcoxon and others published the concept of megastructure, but its core features are highly compatible with the latter. The historical identity at the intersection of two movements enhances the uniqueness of this building and the new town. This research is based on the social and historical background at that time, starting from geography, site selection, planning, and their relationships. Using literature and image investigation, field research, semantic analysis, and other methods targeting specific spaces and events, a critical retrospective study is conducted to analyze the urban paradox and its causes, as well as the role and reflective value of the building in the relationship between planning expectations and reality feedback, focusing on the implementation of its design concepts and technologies. |
