      Cordemoy was one of the pioneers of functionalism in France at the end of the 17th century, and his 《Nouveau Traité de toute l’architecture ou l’art de Bastir》 was structured around three principles of architectural design with “ordonnance, distribution and bienséance”, provoking a challenge to traditional paradigm. Laugier is thought to have followed the vein of functionalism pioneered by Cordemoy. Starting from an exploration of the design of church architecture, Cordemoy initially explored the concepts of modern functionalism and material reality by discerning the relationship between aesthetics and utility. His vision of the ‘Graeco-Gothic’ ideal is also considered a precursor to structural rationalism.
