| This essay is a study of the He Lou Xuan designed by FENG Jizhong and focuses on misunderstandings
surrounding the design of joints in the bamboo structure. In order to deal with fragmentary information in the
published sources，we propose a series of diagrams to consolidate information and identify signiffcant research
questions. By making a detailed analysis of the joints of the bamboo structure，we articulate FENG’s contributions
to contemporary Chinese architecture understood as a problem space. Two questions are involved：In complex cultural
and historical contexts，how can an architect draw on a reffned sense of materials and craft in the search for
breakthroughs and innovation? When confronted by different values and attitudes and constrained by technical
limitations, how could architects realize their ideas? |
