| Chinese campuses are currently at a critical stage, transitioning from rapid expansion to more sustainable, thoughtful development. Meeting the spatial and functional demands of higher education through the renewal of existing campus structures to achieve the strategic goal of sustainable development has become the mainstream value orientation in contemporary university campus planning. Around 2008, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) began facing issues such as environmental degradation, aging buildings, financial constraints, and housing shortages. In response, the university, in collaboration with relevant teams, launched the MIT2030 Framework in 2010, focusing on four key themes: "Innovation and Collaboration," "Renovation and Management," "Sustainability," and "Enhancing Quality of Life and Learning." To date, MIT has effectively addressed multiple development challenges through comprehensive and flexible campus renewal, supporting academic growth and community building. Based on an analysis of the framework’s background and organizational structure, this paper systematically interprets the MIT2030 framework and pattern across three dimensions: development goals, renewal strategies, and implementation paths. Using the MIT Kendall Square planning project as an example, the paper introduces innovative solutions MIT2030 offers in response to complex renewal demands and construction conditions, revealing the underlying value shifts and self-renewal mechanisms. The aim is to provide valuable insights for research and practice in the planning of existing campus spaces in Chinese universities. |
