| This paper takes Professor Zhang Yaozeng’s design of the "terraced" seating in the Heilongjiang Provincial Exhibition Hall Theater as a starting point, situating it within the context of his scholarly research and professional practice in theater architecture. It explores the connections between the seating design of the Heilongjiang Provincial Exhibition Hall Theater and the 2,300-seat proposal for the National Grand Theater in 1958. By integrating oral histories, archival research, and textual analysis, this study reconstructs the historical context, design characteristics, and the theater’s significance in the evolution of modern Chinese theater architecture. Furthermore, the article reviews Professor Zhang Yaozeng’s contributions to the field of theater design, emphasizing his innovative approaches and enduring influence on architectural practice. |
