| This paper focuses on the research and viewpoints of architectural historians regarding Michelangelo's design philosophy since the 19th century, with particular attention to the revolutionary contributions of architectural historian Henry A. Millon in 1969. Using the issue of the Cappella del Re fa?ade design as a case study, the paper analyzes Millon's research approach and compares it with the methods, analytical logic, and historical perspectives of other scholars on this issue. By examining Millon's research paradigm—emphasizing the clarification of timelines, verification of the reliability of historical sources, and rigorous analysis—the paper reveals how he revolutionized the understanding of Michelangelo's design philosophy based on historical facts derived from sources, rather than preconceived notions. Furthermore, it demonstrates how Millon's work has propelled a shift in the paradigm of architectural historical research. |
