| The picturesque transformation of 18th-century European landscape gardens constituted a profound shift in the technology of power. Moving beyond traditional formal analysis, this paper draws upon Gernot B?hme’s aesthetics of atmosphere and Giorgio Agamben’s theory of the apparatus to reveal how these gardens, by adopting the visual paradigms of landscape painting and employing strategies such as path design and visual framing, constructed an immersive sensory environment: a picturesque atmosphere. This atmosphere functioned as a sophisticated apparatus of aesthetic power, gently guiding the visitor’s bodily movement and emotional experience, thereby leading them to unconsciously accept and enact the spatial order underpinning land monopoly, class distinction, and cultural colonization, all while engaged in the pleasure of the stroll. Consequently, the picturesque garden was not a simple negation of classical rationality, but rather a modernization in the operation of power: a transition from explicit hierarchical imposition to an implicit guidance based on sensory experience, marking the preliminary maturation of a technology of power rooted in embodied cultivation. |
