| Representing early modern architectural movements at the turn of 20th century, the German Werkbund is caught in a transitional period between the first reflections on modernity in late 19th century and the establishment of a consistent modernist style in the 1920s—1930s. Its early history saw the burgeoning emergence of modern discourse, the disoriented exploration in new forms and the intense grappling between conflicting parties. As part of the “Cultural Criticism” movement, the Werkbund seized the emerging media boost to popularize its propositions and enhance its discursive influence through exhibitions, publications, lectures, forums and the establishment of institutions for publicity. From the scope of public media, this essay analyzes the organization, recruitment, activities and theory production of the Werkbund to illustrate the historical scenario of early German modern architectural culture in the early 20th century. It recognizes the Werkbund as an institution for publicity with historical contributions in theory far outweighing that in practice, challenges the over-simplifi ed, one-sided image of the Werkbund in major modern history works, and indicates the significance of media studies in researching modern and contemporary architectural culture. |
