      What role might music play in the decorative arts of modernism? This essay explores this complex question by reconstructing an oblique debate that took place between two renowned figures of early twentieth-century Paris—the architect Le Corbusier and the composer Erik Satie. Satie’s invention of “Furniture Music” (a series of short, endlessly repeated tunes designed for specific settings) was a critique of the “background noise” that filled the urban soundscape of modern Paris as well as a response to an emerging design movement that found Le Corbusier at its center. Touching on questions of noise pollution, architectural furnishings, and critical theory, this essay reads Satie’s work as both a critique and an embrace of the “distractedness” of modern urban life.
